Project Description

Well Field Improvements – Fairfield, Ohio

Magna Engineers is providing design engineering services for upgrades to the water system’s existing well pumps. The improvements include a complete electrical upgrade at three of the four pumps, addition of closed circuit video, and replacement of the existing radio based telemetry system with a new fiber optic based system .

Each well pump is located on a raised platform with limited space. Electrical improvements include a new overhead service to each platform. Two of the well pumps are specified with new solid state reduced voltage starters in custom control cabinets. Another of the well pumps is specified with a new variable frequency drive in an air conditioned custom cabinet. The final well pump has an exiting variable frequency drive which will remain. At all locations, new LED lighting and receptacles will be provided.

The existing spread spectrum radio based telemetry system will be upgraded with a new PLC based system which communicates over multi-mode fiber optic cable in a redundant ring configuration. The existing Allen Bradley SLC 5/04 PLC at the water treatment plant will be upgraded to a new ControlLogix PLC. One new CompactLogix PLC at an easily accessible location between the water treatment plant and the well field will provide control for the well pumps. From there, fiber is provided for Ethernet networking to remote I/O at each well pump location. Each location includes a managed Ethernet switch, with fiber connectivity and automatic switchover for the redundant ring.

Fixed IP digital cameras are provided at each well platform, as well as a pan-tilt-zoom camera at the well field PLC location. The cameras will be connected directly to the SCADA Ethernet switch, with video sharing communication with SCADA. At the water treatment plant, a separate workstation will be provided for CCTV monitoring.
