Project Description

Sludge Dewatering System Improvements Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant Madisonville, Kentucky

Magna Engineers provided electrical and instrumentation engineering services for design, bidding, and construction phases of this project at the existing Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The project includes the replacement of two existing traditional belt sludge presses with a four channel rotary fan press. The new press will process up to 120 gallons per minute through the four 48” channels. The main system will be skid mounted, pre-wired and pre-piped. The new system will also include horizontal and incline conveyors for transport of cake to the existing dumpster location. The existing sludge feed pumps, water booster pumps, air compressor, and polymer system are all suitable for use with the new rotary fan press, and are being re-used and connected to the new system.

The new rotary fan press system will include a PLC based control panel with Allen Bradley CompactLogix PLC, as well as variable frequency drive for the press drive motor. The new panel will be networked over Ethernet to the existing plant SCADA system, to monitoring of the system through the existing Trihedral human-machine interface software. Existing controls associated with the sludge pumps, booster pumps, and polymer system were integrated to allow control from the new PLC.

The existing power distribution system was re-designed to accommodate the requirements for the new system, and includes new feeders, branch circuit wiring, and instrumentation and control cabling in new corrosion-resistant raceways.
